Description
This engraving features a head and shoulders portrait of President Abraham Lincoln done from a painting by John H. Littlefield in 1869. The painting was done from a photograph taken of President Lincoln on February 9, 1864. This life-sized adaptation of Littlefield's painting is considered Gugler's finest work. The two-foot by three-foot steel engraving plate is in the collection of the Milwaukee County Historical Society. President Lincoln is shown wearing a black coat, waistcoat, and bow tie and facing toward the viewer's right. The portrait is surrounded by an oval decorative floral border which is encased in a rectangular frame all part of the engraving. The title is printed below the portrait. The publisher's information and engraver's name are printed in the lower margin. Even though this engraving was done by Gugler, it is more commonly known as "the Littlefield engraving."
