Description

This color print features President Abraham Lincoln seated on a rock with his hands clasped together and his head down. Lincoln wears a black coat, vest, trousers, and shoes, as well as a white collared shirt and black bow tie. His black top hat sits on the ground in front of him. Lincoln sits on a hill that overlooks a Union company's camp site, and a Union soldier can be seen at the viewer's left in the image. An American flag waves among the tents. The landscape is brown and relatively dark - a leafless tree stands in the background with other rocks in the foreground. The artist's signature, "William A. Smith" is written in the bottom right corner of the image. The reverse side gives a description of both the image as well as William Smith. Three black and white images from the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection are presented under the title, "A Visit to the Front." The print is from the publisher's Fine American Art Calendar Collection, Eighth Edition. ID number 71.2009.081.1676 is a duplicate image.
