Description
This copper etching was done from Forbes' original sketches done on the battlefields as the special artist for "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" from 1862-1864. This etching depicts the outer picket line. An off duty-soldier sits in a make-shift shelter of pine boughs and fence rails and cooks a meager meal over a fire while trying to warm his hands. Another soldier is visible in the background. The artist's signature is in the plate in the lower left corner. This is Plate 9 of 40 in the Life Studies of the Great Army by Edwin Forbes, copyrighted by him in 1876, and published for subscribers by Henry J. Johnson, New York.
