Description
This lithograph shows the artist's version of the visitors to the deathbed of President Abraham Lincoln in the Petersen house in Washington, D.C., in early morning of April 15, 1865. Lincoln is depicted lying in bed positioned in the center of the room with his head on the pillow. A doctor is seated on the bed beside the president holding Lincoln's left wrist in one hand while holding a pocket watch in the other. Another doctor is seated in a chair to the right of the bed also holding a pocket watch. Secretary Well[e]s is shown seated on a chair at the foot of the bed. Twenty-five other men are shown standing in various poses around the bed a few of which are identified in the margin below the image: Chase, Sumner, Robt Lincoln, Gen Halleck, and Staunton. Coats are hanging on hooks on the wall to the left of the image. Seven framed pictures are hanging on the walls. For more information on other Lincoln deathbed prints with various numbers of visitors present, see Lincoln Lore, number 1517, July, 1964.
