Description

This is a colored lithograph of an original sketch by A. Thorley. The image features Robert E. Lee on a white horse in the center, surrounded by his most important generals who are all riding dark horses. They are all dressed in military uniforms, and there is a faintly depicted battle taking place in the distance behind them. Below the image the names of 21generals are identified: B. Bragg, Pemberton, Beauregard, Fitz Hugh Lee, J.E.B. Stewart, Wade Hampton, Joe Johnston, Jubal Early, J.C. Breckenridge, A.S. Johnston, E.K. Smith, R.E. Lee, Hardee, Longstreet, Forrest, J. B. Hood, A.P. Hull, Stonewall Jackson, J.H. Morgan, R.S. Ewell, Polk, and Mosby. The picture is a composite of portraits based on photographs of Confederate commanders.
