Description
This print is a reproduction of a photograph of a bearded Abraham Lincoln taken on April 20, 1864, in Washington, D.C., by Anthony Berger for artist Frank B. Carpenter. The photograph shows the broken edges of the glass plate negative. Lincoln, wearing a black suit coat, vest, and bow tie, is seated with his left arm resting on papers placed on a table. Printed in the margin below the image: "This magnificent photograph of Lincoln was lost for 83 years. It was discovered by Stefan Lorant, authority on Lincoln photographs, among the unpublished diaries and sketch books of Francis B. Carpenter, painter of the famous Emancipation Proclamation picture."
