Description
This hand-colored lithograph features a head and shoulders portrait of John C. Fremont, a Republican candidate for whom Abraham Lincoln campaigned in the presidential race of 1856 and a general in the Civil War in 1861-1862. The radical Republicans nominated him as a presidential candidate in May, 1864, but he withdrew from the race in September, 1864. Fremont is depicted facing forward but with his head turned toward the viewer's left wearing a reddish-brown coat and a green bow tie.
