Description

This pen and ink illustration done from a photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken on May 7, 1858, in Beardstown, Illinois, is one of several illustrations done by C. M. Biggers for the book "The Lincoln Album : Life of the Preserver of the Union, the Liberator of a People, and the First American" published in 1907 by Hawkins Publishing Company, St. Louis, Missouri. This print features a half-portrait of a beardless Abraham Lincoln seated with his face directed toward the viewer while his body faces toward the viewer's left. Lincoln wears a white jacket and collared shirt with a large black bow tie. The photograph was unique in that Lincoln is shown wearing a white fock coat rather than his traditional black one. Elements of light and dark shadow appear above Lincoln's shoulders and up to his ears. The artist's signature "C. M. B." is written just below Lincoln's right shoulder.
