Description

This drawing is a political cartoon depicting President Abraham Lincoln with a sad, pensive expression as he gazes towards the earth which is visible in the distance below. The landmass on the earth is labeled "U.S.A." A plume of smoke rises from the earth up into outer space symbolizing the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger after lift-off on January 28, 1986. A quotation from President Lincoln's Annual Message to Congress on December 1, 1862, is in the upper right corner: "The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so must we think anew, and act anew. / Abraham Lincoln, 1862." The title and the date are handwritten in blue pencil in the top margin. The artist's signature is in the bottom left corner along with the year. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
