Description
This drawing is a political cartoon that depicts President Lyndon B. Johnson holding a document in front of him on which is written Abraham Lincoln's well-known quotation: "A House divided against itself cannot stand. . ." However, President Johnson has just crossed through "House" and written instead "Vietnam Policy" with his pen. A framed portrait on the back wall portrays President Abraham Lincoln looking down at Johnson with an annoyed expression. The artist signed his name and the year in the bottom right corner below Johnson's elbow. "636" is written and underlined in pencil in the bottom margin. On the reverse side the date "February 12 1966" has been stamped on in purple ink. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
