Description

This drawing is a political cartoon published in the Dayton, Ohio, Journal-Herald on February 12, 1972. President Abraham Lincoln is depicted with one hand rubbing his chin in a thoughtful manner. Next to him is a text bubble that reads ". . .A New Birth of Freedom. . .?" Lincoln's gaze falls on a small globe on the surface of which is a land mass representing the United States. The phrase "On the increase in the U.S.A." is surrounded by the words, "Permissiveness", "Abortions", "Drugs", "Pornography", "Deficit Spending", "Crimes", and "Strikes." The artist signed the bottom of the drawing with his name and the year. The date "Feb. 12" is handwritten in blue pencil in the upper left corner of the margin. The title is also written in blue pencil in the center of the upper margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
