Description

This pen and ink sketch features a head and shoulders portrait of President Abraham Lincoln done from a painting by William Edgar Marshall in 1865. Lincoln is shown wearing a dark coat and bow tie and facing slightly toward the viewer's right. The portrait is emphasized with swirled lines following the contours of Lincoln's head and shoulders. In the lower left corner is the publisher's information: "Compliments of The Lincoln national Life Insurance Company of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Pioneer Branch Agency-Fargo, N.D." The sketch was done sometime during the early years of the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company to be reproduced for newspaper and magazine advertising purposes as well as for calendars and letterhead.
