Description
Front cover of Harper's Weekly, Journal of Civilization, from Saturday, September 12, 1868. The image adorning the cover features a dark scene from Abraham Lincoln's tomb in Springfield, Illinois. The tomb runs horizontally across the center of the composition and features a stone facade with sloped walls flanking the entrance. The words "Our Sacred Dead, Lincoln," are carved into the center archway. A couple stands in front of the entrance and a mother with a child sits in the left foreground. The tomb is surrounded by thick vegetation and has a dirt path leading up to the door. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
