Description
This poster refers to a style of writing that Abraham Lincoln is said to have mentioned as his favorite. The books shown with the bust of President Lincoln are books of poetry by Oliver Goldsmith and Thomas Gray. According to the text under the image, the books were the "property of Mrs. Simeon Francis who introduced Lincoln to Mary Todd Lincoln." Additional text says "Lincoln told Simeon Francis the following was his favorite style of speech." The text of two letters written by Oliver Goldsmith follows the sentence. One letter is to Goldsmith's brother, Rev. Henry Goldsmith. The other letter is to a fellow writer, Sir Joshua Reynolds. A decorative rectangular border surrounds image and text. This is a second copy of 71.2009.083.1252. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
