Description
This sepia-toned illustration shows the artists concept of young barefooted Abraham Lincoln with his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Abe is wearing a light colored short sleeve shirt with darker trousers held up by a single suspender. Nancy is wearing a light colored long-sleeved blouse with a darker skirt, an apron tied around her waist, and a bonnet tied under her chin. She is standing behind Abe with her hands on his shoulders and posed in front of a split rail fence with a bucket on the ground beside them. The title is directly beneath the image. Below the title is the quotation, "All that I am or ever shall hope to be, I owe to my loving angel mother. God Bless her." Below the quotation and to the right is a facsimile Lincoln signature. Just above the bottom edge on the left is the text "Lincoln picture from copyrighted illustration by Lloyd Ostendorf." The signature of the artist in blue ink extends up the right side of the image vertically. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
