Description

This engraving done by Ernest F. Hubbard after a painting by Morgan Rhees depicts a teenaged Lincoln taking a break from splitting rails to read a book. He is shown reclining on the ground with his head resting against his right hand which is propped up on the log on which he had been working. Lincoln's left hand rests on the book he is reading. Lincoln is shown wearing buckskin trousers and shirt both of which have fringed seams. The axe Lincoln was using is partially sunk into the log with wood chips and twigs scattered around on the ground. The background is a wooded area.
