Description
This pen and ink illustration depicting the Vandalia, Illinois, State House is one of several illustrations done by C. M. Biggers for the book "The Lincoln Album : Life of the Preserver of the Union, the Liberator of a People, and the First American" published in 1907 by Hawkins Publishing Company, St. Louis, Missouri. Vandalia was the state capital from 1820 until 1839 when the capital was moved to Springfield. This was where Abraham Lincoln served as a member of the Illinois General Assembly during the early years of his political career beginning in 1834. The building has two stories with a small bell tower and steeple in the center. The front of the building has four stone pillars with a door in the center behind them. Windows are on either side of the door as well as above. The structure is surrounded by trees and shrubbery, and there are large puffy clouds in the distant sky. The artist's initials appear in the bottom right corner of the print. The entire book pdf can be viewed online at https: //ia802905.us.archive.org. This illustration appears on page 28 in the book.
