Description

Bulletin with bold headline: To The Loyal Women of America. Document is divided into two columns with a line running the length of the page, which divides them. The first column consists entirely of an introductory address, which also takes up 1/4 of the second column. The address is to American "Countrywomen" and describes the functions and needs of the Sanitary Commission, in order to serve "sick and wounded" soldiers." The second column has a section entitled "Description of Articles Wanted" in bold font, followed by a list of items. There is a list of addresses to which parcels may be sent in the following paragrah, as well as a list of Commissioners. "A. Lincoln" appears in capital letters at the bottom right of the page, as does the location and date of the piece, (Washington, September 30, 1861) The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection includes several more items related to various sanitary fairs held during the 1860s to raise funds for the United States Sanitary Commission such as a printed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln, a donation certificate, a fan, a medal, several lithographs, sheet music, "The Sanitary Commission of the United States: a Succinct Narrative of Its Works and Purposes," and several related books and catalogs of items donated for sale at various sanitary fairs, the full texts of which are also online.
