Description
This engraving features a head and shoulders left-profile portrait of George B. McCellan, Union major general in the Civil War and Democratic presidential candidate in 1864. Done from a photograph, McClellan is depicted in his military uniform with two stars visible on his shoulder. He organized the Army of the Potomac and served as general-in-chief of the Union Army in 1861-1862 until President Lincoln relieved McClellan of his command due to his overly-cautious battle strategy. A handwritten inscription in ink "With the kindest regards of Geo. B. McClellan" is in the lower right corner of the image just above the title.
