Description
This tinted lithograph, done from a painting by J. E. Baker, features a three-quarter length portrait of Major General John E. Wool, one of four general officers in the Army at the beginning of the United States Civil War. He is depicted standing in full military uniform with his hat in his right hand and his left hand resting on a map. The scene in the background depicts the battle to take Fort Monroe, Virginia, in August of 1861. The title and subtitle, "Commanding U. S.
