Description

This watercolor on heavy textured paper was done by President Abraham Lincoln's great-granddaugher, Mary Lincoln Beckwith, also known as Peggy Beckwith. It features an upper level view of a white bridge with arches over a a body of water, probably a river. In the foreground the viewer sees bushes and trees, the tops of nearby houses, and a fence. In the background on the opposite side of the bridge are three smokestacks indicating an industrial area. Brushed in a gray watercolor in the lower right corner is the date 5/23/36. The artist used both sides of the paper. Please see 71.2009.081.0798b for the painting done on the reverse of this one.
