General Robert E. Lee is depicted on the left hand side sitting at a desk examining the terms of surrender. General Ulysses S. Grant is shown seated beside a round table. Various other generals, both Union and Confederate are shown in the room. The text in the lower margin reads, "The Surrender of Lee, Appomattox Court House, VA. April 9th, 1865". Just beneath the scene in smaller font are the names of the soldiers shown in addition to Lee and Grant: Col. Marshall, Gen. Seth Williams, Gen. Babcock, Gen. Parker, Adj. Gen. Bowers, Gen. H. Porter, Gen. Dent, Gen. Ord, Gen. Ingalls, Gen. Badeau, Gen. Rawlins, C. of S., and Gen. Sheridan. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
