Description

This print features the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to Lieut. General Ulysses S. Grant as drawn by artist E. Valois. The latter is depicted on the right, handing Lee a document stating the terms of surrender; Lee's hand is extended. They stand in front of a tree. Their armies are pictured in the background. The text underneath the print reads, "The Surrender of General Lee and His Entire Army to Lieut. General U.S. Grant, April 9th,1865. This memorable event terminated the great Rebellion." Below the image is printed: "Drawn by E. Valois, printed by Wm. C. Robertson, New York. On the left side just beneath the scene: Published by Thomas Kelly."
