Description
This copper etching was done from Forbes' original sketches done on the battlefields as the special artist for "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" from 1862-1864. This etching depicts a party of slaves with their master's old schooner (wagon) and a "spike" team that have started for the Union lines. They are passing the picket post. On the distant hill some laggards appear in sight, one waving his hat for joy as he catches sight of "Massa Linkum's sodgers." The artist's signature is in the plate in the lower left corner. This is Plate 30 of 40 in the Life Studies of the Great Army by Edwin Forbes, copyrighted by him in 1876, and published for subscribers by Henry J. Johnson, New York.
