Description
This mezzotint engraving commemorates the Compromise of 1850 by depicting a couple dozen political figures dressed in suits, signing a paper scroll with quill pens. The most prominent figures include: Henry Clay, John Calhoun, and Daniel Webster. The others are Winfield Scott, Lewis Cass, Millard Fillmore, Howell Cobb, James McDowell, Thomas Hart Benton, John M. Clayton, Thomas Corwin, James Buchanan, Stephen A. Douglas, John J. Crittenden, Sam Houston, Henry Foote, Willie P. Mangum, W. R. King, Daniel S. Dickinson, John McLean, John Bell and John C. Fremont. Columbia and a patriotic eagle part drapery in the background. The title, engraver and date are printed at the bottom of the paper.
