Description
This lithograph features a bearded Abraham Lincoln on horseback in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln is in the center with groups of men and women standing around with a few waving to him. The Lincoln family home is in the background. The title and other information are printed at the bottom. A subtitle reads "In Springfield, Illinois, as they appeared on his return at the close of the Campaign with Senator Douglas." The major inaccuracy in this print is Lincoln's beard. At the close of the campaign for the Illinois Senate seat between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in 1858, Lincoln did not have a beard. He did not grow the beard until after his election to the presidency in November of 1860. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
