Description

Lithograph depicts the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia by Confederate General Robert E. Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House at Appomattox. The print features Lee, Grant, and other officers assembled in a parlor, negotiating the terms of surrender. In the room in the background there are several paintings, a draped window to the far right of the composition, and a fireplace in the center. Facsimile signatures of Lee and Grant and the printed names of the others present in the scene are in the lower margin. For more information on this print, see pages 68-72 in "The Confederate Image" by Neely, Holzer, and Boritt. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
