Description
This is a lithograph featuring George "Little Mac" McClellan standing in front of a shovel and wheel barrow, as he reportedly tries to dig his way into the White House (visible in the background). In the middle-ground is a ghastly group of faintly visible skeletons. In the foreground, McClellan is stunned by the appearance of a "spiritual manifestation" of Liberty, who floats in the air and bears a sword and shield as she warns McClellan to leave his pursuit of the presidency. The full title appears below the drawing: "Little Mac Trying to Dig His Way Into the White House But Is Frightened By Spiritual Manifestations._" Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
