Description

This colored lithograph depicts a soldier in Zouave uniform embracing his wife while holding an American flag. Their child stands before them, reaching up toward the father and a black dog jumps on his leg. The man and child both wear baggy red pants, white bindings on their legs, a short blue jacket, and red hats with blue tassels. Another American flag can be seen to the back left along with a row of soldiers in front of a large building. The print is titled in the margin "Off for the War." Thomas W. Strong was a New York publisher of popular lithographs, along with penny ballads and comic valentines. His output is quite varied in subject and quality. He was the first American employer of Louis Maurer. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
