Description

This print shows a map of the route taken by the Abraham Lincoln funeral cortege. The train left Washington, D.C., on the morning of April 21, 1865, to travel almost the same route as Lincoln's inaugural train route in reverse. The train traveled through Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Indiana before ending the trip on May 3rd, 1865, at Springfield, Illinois, where the burial ceremony took place. In a box in the upper left corner of the map is text that reads: "Map showing route taken by the great funeral train conveying the remains of Abraham Lincoln from Washington, D.C. to Springfield Ills. April 21 to May 3rd, 1865." The map also has a star marking the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln at Hodgenville, Kentucky. Text printed below the map reads: "Map of the route taken by the Great Abraham Lincoln Funeral Cortege, lasting from 8 o'clock a.m. April 21st to 9 a.m. May 3rd, 1865. Greatest funeral ever known to man; the distance traveled was 1,662 miles. It is estimated that over 1,500,000 people viewed the remains of the Martyr President while en route to Springfield, Ill."
