Description
Thischromolithograph is a reproduction of a bronze medallion both done by the artist William Miller. He created the medallion to represent the unity of the United States government. The three men pictured are George Washington, founder of the country; Abraham Lincoln, saviour of the Union; and Ulysses S. Grant, preserver of the Union. The chromolithograph of the medallion was done so more people could afford to have the image in their homes. The heads of the three presidents are in the center of the medallion. Above them is the title, Triumviri Americani which translates to Triumphant America. Below the heads are descriptions and dates each of them took office: Pater [Father] 1789; Salvator [Saviour] 1861; Custos [Preserver] 1869. A border of five-pointed stars surrounds the medallion. "Artist Proof Wm" Miller" is handwritten in pencil just below "Salvator 1861." The publisher's information is printed at the top and bottom edges of the medallion. See ID numbers 71.2009.081.2172 and 71.2009.081.2410 for posters of a similar image with the title in English. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
