York (Pa.) -- History.
Detached from McClure's magazine, April, 1922.; CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS TO REACH THIS DOCUMENT.; Farquhar recounts his meeting and conversation with Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Stanton following the 1863 surrender of York, Pennsylvania.; When the Confederates invaded York County, Pennsylvania, A.B. Farquhar, a young businessman, made initial contact with the Confederates. This prompted the Committee of Safety to send a delegation west of town to officially cut a surrender agreement with Gen. John B. Gordon. The surrender, which soon became controversial, did not derail Farquhar from achieving business success. After the war, he became one of York County's leading businessmen, owning an international farm implement manufacturing business.
