Proclamation of Emancipation

This photograph was taken of a painting by D. T. Ames commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation. The calligraphic text of the proclamation is the background for Lincoln’s image all of which is surrounded by portraits of Lincoln’s cabinet members with the portraits of Generals Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Thomas set out at the corners. This photograph made a very affordable addition to 19th century photograph albums.
